Creating a CNAME record for any one of the domain addresses or subdomains that you've got within a hosting account will allow you to point it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain name will lose all its records - A, MX and so on, and will take the records of the domain it's being redirected to. In this light, you simply can't create a CNAME record to redirect your domain name to a third-party provider and retain a functional e-mail service with the first provider. It is also essential to know that a CNAME record is always a string of words rather than a number because it is commonly confused with the A record of the domain address being redirected. One of the primary uses of a CNAME record is to point a domain name which you own through one company to the servers of some other company assuming you have set up an Internet site with the latter. This way, the website will appear under your own domain, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party provider.

CNAME Records in Web Hosting

In case you have a web hosting plan from our company and you want to create a CNAME record, it'll take you just a few clicks to make it happen. You can access the DNS records for all domain addresses and subdomains hosted inside your account through the Hepsia Control Panel that comes with each plan and adding a new record is as simple as clicking on a button, choosing the type, that will be CNAME in this case, entering the actual record value and saving the change. In case you have never added this sort of record before, we have a Help section with a detailed video tutorial that you can watch, or you can just contact us and we will help you with this task. If you have set up a website using another provider, you want to use a private URL for your webmail or you wish to designate a subdomain to be used with the services of a different company, like Google Apps, all it takes is creating a CNAME record with a couple of mouse clicks within your Control Panel.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server from our company and you would like to set up a CNAME record, it will take no more than a couple of mouse clicks to complete this task. The plans are managed via our in-house built Hepsia hosting Control Panel in which you will see a section dedicated to the DNS records of the domain addresses and subdomains hosted inside the account. To create a CNAME record, you will only have to select the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), type in where the latter will be pointed to and save the change. The new record will be active almost immediately in our system and will propagate worldwide within a couple of hours.
